ANNE OF GREEN GABLES by Lucy Montgomery Chapter1, Mrs. Rachel Lynde Is Surprised Mrs. Rachel Lynde lived in a small house by a road. Her house was near a little brook. She was a good woman and a busy person. She helped the church and did many things. But she also had time to sit at her window and looked at the road. She looked at all people who went in and out of the town. Mrs. Rachel was at her window one afternoon in June. The sun was warm. Thomas Lynde, her husband, was in the field. Matthew Cuthbert was not in his field. Mrs. Rachel knew that Matthew had to work today because she heard him tell Peter at a shop the evening before that he had to work the next afternoon. But now Matthew was in his carriage on the road. He wore nice clothes and a white shirt. This was not normal. Matthew did not go out much. He was a quiet man and did not like to talk to people. Mrs. Rachel was not happy because she did not know why Matthew went out. "I will go to Green Gables after I eat and ask Marilla where Matthew went and why," Mrs. Rachel said. "He does not go to town at this time. He does not go to see people. If he needed something for his farm, he would not wear nice clothes. He was not going fast, so he was not going to see a doctor. But something must have happened. I must know why Matthew Cuthbert went out today." After tea, she went out. She did not have to go far. The big house where the Cuthberts lived was near. But the way to the house was long. Matthew Cuthbert's father was a quiet man, like his son. He built his house far from other people. Green Gables was far from the road. All other houses in Avonlea were near the road. Mrs. Rachel thought this was not a good way to live. "It is not good," she said as she walked along the road with many green plants. "Matthew and Marilla are a little different because they live here alone. Trees are not good company. I like to look at people. But they look happy. A person can be happy with anything."
Mrs. Rachel walked into the Green Gables yard. The yard was very green and clean. There were many trees. There was not one thing on the ground. Marilla cleaned the yard many times. You could eat from this ground. Mrs. Rachel went to the door and went in. The kitchen at Green Gables was a nice room. It was very clean. It had windows to the east and west. The sun came in from the west window. But the east window had many green plants. Marilla Cuthbert sat there. She did not like the sun. She thought the world must be a serious place. She sat there and worked. The table behind her was ready for dinner. Mrs. Rachel looked at all the things on the table. There were three places on the table. So Marilla must think some person will come with Matthew for dinner. But the table was not for important people. So, why did Matthew wear nice clothes? Mrs. Rachel was not happy with this question. "Good evening, Rachel," Marilla said. "This is a nice evening. Do you want to sit? How are all your people?" Marilla and Rachel were friends. They were different but they were friends. Marilla was a tall woman. She was thin. Her hair was dark with some grey. She looked like a woman with not many friends, but her mouth showed she could be funny. "We are all well," said Rachel. "But I thought you were not well when I saw Matthew go out today. I thought he went to see a doctor." Marilla smiled. She knew Rachel would come. She knew Rachel would ask why Matthew went out. "No, I am well, but I had a problem with my head yesterday," she said. "Matthew went to Bright River. We want a little boy from a place for children with no parents in Nova Scotia. He will come on the train today." Mrs. Rachel was very, very surprised. She could not speak for some time. She thought Marilla made a joke. "Are you serious, Marilla?" Mrs. Rachel asked when she could speak again.
"Yes, of course," said Marilla, as if getting boys from places for children with no parents in Nova Scotia was a normal thing to do. Mrs. Rachel felt very surprised. She thought: A boy! Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert want a boy! From a place for children with no parents! The world was going crazy! She would not be surprised at anything now! "Why did you think about this?" she asked. This was not good because Mrs. Rachel did not help with this idea. "Well, we thought about it for a long time," said Marilla. "Mrs. Alexander Spencer came here before Christmas and said she wanted to get a little girl from a place for children with no parents. Her family lives there and Mrs. Spencer knows all about it. So Matthew and I talked about it. We wanted a boy. Matthew is old now - he is sixty - and he is not strong. His heart is not good. And it is hard to find people to help on the farm. So we asked Mrs. Spencer to find us a good boy about ten or eleven years old. He would be old enough to help but young enough to learn. We want to give him a good home and school. We had a message from Mrs. Alexander Spencer today that said they were coming on the train at five-thirty tonight. So Matthew went to Bright River to meet him. Mrs. Spencer will come with him and then go to White Sands." Mrs. Rachel always said what she thought and she said it now. "Well, Marilla, I think you are doing a bad thing. You do not know what you are getting. You are bringing a boy you do not know into your house. You do not know anything about him or his family. Last week I read in the newspaper about a boy from a place for children with no parents who started a fire in the house. And I know a boy who ate all the eggs. If you asked me - but you did not - I would say do not do this." Marilla was not worried. She worked on her knitting. "I know what you say is right, Rachel. I felt the same. But Matthew wanted it very much. So I said yes. Matthew does not ask for many things, so when he does, I feel I must say yes. And there are problems with everything in life. People have their own children, and
the children are not always good. And Nova Scotia is near. He will not be very different from us." "Well, I hope it will be all right," said Rachel, but she did not think it would be. "But do not say I did not tell you if he starts a fire at Green Gables or puts bad things in your water. I know about a girl from a place for children with no parents who did that and all the family died." "Well, we are not getting a girl," said Marilla, as if girls were the only ones who put bad things in water. "I would never get a girl. I think Mrs. Alexander Spencer is strange for doing it. But she would get many children if she wanted to." Rachel wanted to stay until Matthew came home with the boy. But she knew it would be two hours. So she decided to go to Robert Bell's house to tell this news. She loved to tell big news. So she left. Marilla was happy to see her go because Rachel made her feel worried again. "Well!" said Rachel when she was on the road. "It feels like a dream. I feel sorry for that poor boy. Matthew and Marilla do not know anything about children. They will think he must be very good and very smart. It is strange to think of a child at Green Gables. There was never a child there. Matthew and Marilla were adults when they built the new house. I would not want to be that boy. I feel very sorry for him." This is what Rachel said to the flowers. But if she saw the child who was at Bright River station at that time, she would feel even more sorry for him.
Matthew no salía mucho.
Marilla no estaba preocupada.
